From the artist.

Up this week is a legend of the field and holder of one of the most outstanding records of the game. Tyrus Raymond Cobb.

Now this has been an absolutely fascinating subject. I have to give a ton of credit to the amazing book that was suggested to me a few months ago - Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty by Charles Leerhsen. This book helped equip me with the confidence to actually do this piece to begin with and in a roundabout way helped shape it’s direction. There’s a fairly monstrous narrative about Ty Cobb that’s dug deep into our psyche and it’s been that way for decades. The why’s and what’s of all that are well-known enough to need no mention here. It’s the story that I knew and accepted about him up until very recently. This book shown a light onto these themes and revealed an interesting, complicated, layered, nuanced and relatable human.  Perfect? Absolutely not. The cartoonish one-dimensional monster of myth? That’s a big no there too.

Once I had the confidence to move forward with this piece I was only going to focus on the incredible baseball player he was….not just physically also mentally. He aimed to be a “psychological hazard” to his opponent. He had a theory and philosophy that was all his own when it came to the game, from the way he held his bat to the way he lead off, to his behavior on the on deck circle. It was all calculated. All intentional.

But the more I thought of it, the story of Ty Cobb is so much of the myth that was built about him. You absolutely cannot mention Ty Cobb to even the most passive of baseball fans without first getting into the mythology of “did you know he did….” or “did you know he was…” within the first mention of his name. I felt that I had to reference the myths in some way…but contrary to how I like to exaggerate and build upon existing myths and characterizations, I felt the it was important to not lean into that here. I do not want to become a Ty Cobb apologist per se but I also did not want to add fuel on an arsonist’s fire already burning for decades. So his fierce competitiveness is referenced here as my main point - but the myth being separate from the man is referenced here also, along with poignant quote from Cobb - about success, yes, but also about being sure you are a decent human being along with that success.”
