When I first started thinking about doing a Pat Murphy piece, I knew pretty quickly that I didn't want to make a World Series piece.

I mean, they just won the World Series, so obviously it was going to find its way in there somewhere. But I wanted the piece to be about Murph. What kind of manager he is and, more specifically, what he seems to bring out of the people around him.

The more I thought about it, though, the less sense it made to put him front and center like some conquering hero. That doesn't really seem like his thing. His whole approach is about the team, and about what he describes as “love and discipline, in that order.”

That's where the corner came from. I started thinking about a fighter between rounds. He's tired. He's taken some shots. He's sitting on the stool trying to get himself together, and Murph is right there with him, hand on his shoulder, talking him through it before he has to get back up and keep going.

The player isn't anybody in particular. He's the team.

And that became Murph's Corner.

I sent Pat the original idea and he got it. He also sent along a few things he wanted worked into the piece: BELIEF. RELENTLESS. UNCOMMON MINDSET. They're all in there.

So are pancakes. And syrup. And a few other things that probably won't jump out at you right away....like a  a World Series trophy made out of pancakes. (How could it be wrong if it feels so right?)

I started this piece trying not to make the World Series the whole story. Then Milwaukee went and won the dang thing, which actually made me like the idea even more. The championship is there, but it isn't the point.

Murph is in the corner.
