The Curse of Rocky Colavito: The Trade That Shouldn’t Have Happened

Some trades shake up a roster.
This one fractured a franchise.

In 1960, Frank Lane—Cleveland’s GM and self-declared wheeler-and-dealer—made a move that stunned the baseball world: he traded away Rocky Colavito, the reigning home run king, the heart of the lineup, and the soul of a city.

Not because he had to.
Because he wanted to.

Why This Piece Matters

This isn’t a story of bad luck.
This is a story of bad choices.

Frank Lane was known for making headlines. He once said, “The only deal I ever regretted was the one I didn’t make.” But in trading Colavito, he didn’t just swap players—he invited a curse.

The Indians spiraled.
The fans never forgot.
And Rocky? He was never truly home again.

This piece captures the weight of that moment—not in box scores or stat lines, but in emotion, mythology, and memory. A deal that felt so wrong, people gave it a name:

The Curse of Rocky Colavito.

The Trade Reimagined as Tragedy

Styled like a haunted comic book cover, this print leans full tilt into pulp horror storytelling, distressed textures, and big emotional swings.

Lane doesn’t escape blame here—he’s the shadow in the corn, the ghost behind the deal. Colavito is the tragic hero, caught in a story he didn’t write, forced to carry the weight of a decision that was never his.

This isn’t about whether you believe in curses.
It’s about how a single trade can haunt a city.
And how a GM self-described as "Trader Frank" became something far darker in Cleveland lore.

What is Pop Fly?

Pop Fly Pop Shop is an ongoing art project by Daniel Jacob Horine that started in 2020. At its core, the project features weekly limited-edition collectible art prints called “Pop Flys,” each measuring 7 x 10.5". These prints showcase sports legends and iconic moments, depicted in the vibrant, exaggerated style of comic book storytelling. Each release captures the magic of both sports and art, making Pop Flys a unique fusion of nostalgia and creativity.

What’s Included?

Each Pop Fly art print measures 7 x 10.5" and is hand-signed and numbered by the artist on the back. It comes packaged in a comic book sleeve, reminiscent of the comics you collected as a kid. Additionally, each print includes a collectible ticket, which is also produced in limited editions. These tickets are as collectible as the prints themselves, adding another layer of nostalgia and value to the overall experience. We want the feeling of opening a Pop Fly to transport you back in time to those moments of excitement and joy from childhood.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Every time I look at these prints, I think of my father. If artists can channel their adversity into incredible works of art that we get to enjoy, then we should challenge ourselves to turn our struggles into something that can benefit others.”
