The 112th Pop Fly Print features one of my favorite stories in baseball lore.
If you're unfamiliar..
Whenever you've got a scandal, you've got a headline. But if there's a coverup - then you've got a story. And this story is one of baseball's weirdest tales.
During a game on July 15th, 1994, the White Sox were tipped off that Cleveland slugger Albert Belle was using a corked bat. The bat was confiscated and put in the umpire's locker room to be investigated later.
But - here's where the story gets interesting.
Knowing the bat was indeed corked, the Indians sent pitcher Jason Grimsley to retrieve the bat. For the next 4 innings, Grimsley carefully crawled through the ceiling, dropped into the umpire's dressing room, switched the corked bat with a Paul Sorrento bat, and brought Belle's bat back in.
The heist was not well thought out nor well executed, and it was immediately uncovered. However, what wasn't discovered was who the culprit was - until Grimsley admitted to the caper 5 years later.
So this failed attempt to cheat and botched switcher-ooo ended up becoming one of the most memorable tales in all of baseball lore.
