Greg Luzinski was a very big man who hit baseballs a very long way. They called him The Bull, which seems pretty appropriate. And when you've got a nickname like that, there are about a hundred different ways you could approach a piece of artwork. Most of them probably involve a rather intimidating guy swinging a bat, and ya know, that's kinda what I thought I'd be doing too for this. BUT I kept thinking about something else.

In 1978, Greg received the Roberto Clemente Award for his charitable work, and he's also had a reputation for being incredibly generous & approachable with fans. I really  liked that about him. Here's this enormous, powerful ballplayer with one of the more intimidating nicknames in baseball, and yet there's this whole other side to the guy that the nickname doesn't really account for which got me thinking about another bull. Ferdinand.

If you remember the old children's book The Story of Ferdinand, it's about a bull who, unlike all the other bulls, isn't particularly interested in fighting. He's perfectly happy sitting under a cork tree smelling the flowers. It's a wonderful  book, originally published the year my mom was born in 1936, and I started wondering what it might look like if somebody had made a similar book about Greg Luzinski.

So that's what I decided to do. I went back to the original cover, only this time, Instead of Ferdinand, there is a baseball player nicknamed "The Bull" and scattered throughout the cover are little pieces of Greg's baseball life.

I  do realize there's something a little ridiculous about making a children's book cover featuring a 6-foot-1, 225-pound slugger who hit 307 home runs, but I think that's part of what I love about it.  The more I learned about Greg, the more appropriate it seemed. It's cliche' to say it but he's a "gentle giant"

This is my first athlete collaboration in quite a while, and I'm really happy that Greg was willing to let me take his story in this direction. I can't think of a much better way to kick off Season 14.

What is Pop Fly?

Pop Fly Pop Shop is an ongoing art project by Daniel Jacob Horine that started in 2020. At its core, the project features weekly limited-edition collectible art prints called “Pop Flys,” each measuring 7 x 10.5". These prints showcase sports legends and iconic moments, depicted in the vibrant, exaggerated style of comic book storytelling. Each release captures the magic of both sports and art, making Pop Flys a unique fusion of nostalgia and creativity.

What’s Included?

Each Pop Fly art print measures 7 x 10.5" and is hand-signed and numbered by the artist on the back. It comes packaged in a comic book sleeve, reminiscent of the comics you collected as a kid. Additionally, each print includes a collectible ticket, which is also produced in limited editions. These tickets are as collectible as the prints themselves, adding another layer of nostalgia and value to the overall experience. We want the feeling of opening a Pop Fly to transport you back in time to those moments of excitement and joy from childhood.

“Every time I look at these prints, I think of my father. If artists can channel their adversity into incredible works of art that we get to enjoy, then we should challenge ourselves to turn our struggles into something that can benefit others.”

Meet the Artist

Daniel is the artist that designs all of our Pop Fly Pop Shop prints. Every piece is made with purposeful intentionality and thoughtful effort. Daniel is a storyteller, and during every drop, he is able to showcase the player’s journey and important moments from their career. The art prints do not simply focus on the player's image but about the entire path that has led them to the big leagues.
