From the Artist:

I don't imagine Wally Moon is a name that comes up very often in conversations about baseball anymore (and he's never been a suggestion from anyone for me to feature) but for a few years, especially in Los Angeles, he was a  big deal. A much better player than you may realize, he started his career in St. Louis where he was the Rookie of the Year in 1954. A few years later he joined the Dodgers and when they moved into the LA Coliseum, they found themselves playing in a stadium that wasn't designed for baseball. Left field was only 251 feet away, but there was a 42-foot screen standing in front of it. Moon, a lefty, figured out how to alter his swing and send these enormous, looping fly balls over that screen. They became known as Moon Shots, a nickname that caught on (with the help of the legendary Vin Scully) during a time when America was completely obsessed with the Space Race.

And then there's Wally himself. If you've never seen a photograph of him, I encourage you to look one up. He had one of the most remarkable unibrows in baseball history, and a face that looked like it belonged in a comic book. Between that face, his name, and the whole Moon Shot business, I couldn't resist. This one is for me. I had to.

Not every baseball story needs to be about a legendary moment or a household name. Sometimes it's about a guy who figured out how to hit a baseball over a screen, and somehow ended up with a little piece of the Space Age attached to his name forever, and one iconic eyebrow.

What is Pop Fly?

Pop Fly Pop Shop is an ongoing art project by Daniel Jacob Horine that started in 2020. At its core, the project features weekly limited-edition collectible art prints called “Pop Flys,” each measuring 7 x 10.5". These prints showcase sports legends and iconic moments, depicted in the vibrant, exaggerated style of comic book storytelling. Each release captures the magic of both sports and art, making Pop Flys a unique fusion of nostalgia and creativity.

What’s Included?

Each Pop Fly art print measures 7 x 10.5" and is hand-signed and numbered by the artist on the back. It comes packaged in a comic book sleeve, reminiscent of the comics you collected as a kid. Additionally, each print includes a collectible ticket, which is also produced in limited editions. These tickets are as collectible as the prints themselves, adding another layer of nostalgia and value to the overall experience. We want the feeling of opening a Pop Fly to transport you back in time to those moments of excitement and joy from childhood.

“Every time I look at these prints, I think of my father. If artists can channel their adversity into incredible works of art that we get to enjoy, then we should challenge ourselves to turn our struggles into something that can benefit others.”

Meet the Artist

Daniel is the artist that designs all of our Pop Fly Pop Shop prints. Every piece is made with purposeful intentionality and thoughtful effort. Daniel is a storyteller, and during every drop, he is able to showcase the player’s journey and important moments from their career. The art prints do not simply focus on the player's image but about the entire path that has led them to the big leagues.
