10¢ BEER NIGHT
June 4, 1974. It wasn't supposed to be anything more than a promotion. $.10 beer. Seems simple enough. A few more people in the seats. It's Tuesday night that felt like any other. But this one already had something underneath it. Six days earlier the Indians and Rangers had gone out in Texas. Players hitting players. Fans throwing things. Bad blood that didn't have anywhere to go.
And then Cleveland poured gasoline on it. $.10 a cup. Six at a time. No limit. What followed wasn't one moment. It was a slow unraveling. A chant here, a firecracker there. A streaker cutting across the infield like it was part of the show. Beer line stretching all the way to the trucks. By the ninth ending the game didn't matter anymor. The crowd did.
They tied at 5-5, one more run and it would be over.
And then someone ran on the field. That was it. Players grab bats to defend themselves fans came pouring out of the stands, bases were ripped from the ground and never returned. The field became something else entirely. On the radio you can hear it turning in real time: "this is absolutely tragedy"
The game was forfeited. But that's not really how anyone remembers it. They remember that feeling. The sense that something small had gone very very far and there was no one there to stop it.
This piece isn't about a single player, it's about that moment when everything tips when the rules are technically still in place… But no longer mean anything.

Each Pop Fly art print measures 7 x 10.5" and is hand-signed and numbered by the artist on the back. It comes packaged in a comic book sleeve, reminiscent of the comics you collected as a kid. Additionally, each print includes a collectible ticket, which is also produced in limited editions. These tickets are as collectible as the prints themselves, adding another layer of nostalgia and value to the overall experience. I discovered Pop Fly Shop too late for Rickey in Green and Gold. This one is great since it's Rickey and really great if you're a Yankees fan. My wife and I met him at the Oakland Coliseum about 2 weeks after his HOF induction/speech. He'd played minor league ball for the A's in Modesto our then hometown. He went way out of his way to come back to talk with us, his small posse in tow and spent 5 or10 minutes talking and reminiscing. In my eyes he's always in Oakland, holding 3rd base over his head after breaking Lou Brock's record OR running wild for Billy Martin in 1980 as a young rookie.
