On a summer night in 1999, the world of Major League Baseball witnessed an event that blurred the lines between strategy and comedy, courtesy of Bobby Valentine and his infamous disguise. This episode, now fondly referred to as the "mustache game," unfolded during a tense match between the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays, taking an unexpected turn that would endear Valentine to fans and baseball aficionados for years to come.

Valentine, then the manager of the Mets, found himself ejected from the game in the 12th inning for arguing a catcher's interference call.

However, the story took a whimsical turn that would etch this incident in baseball folklore. In an act that seemed inspired by the antics of a "Secret Valentine," Valentine reappeared in the dugout disguised with a fake painted-on mustache and sunglasses, adopting a cheeky incognito persona. This surreptitious return was both a playful defiance of his ejection and a moment that lightened the competitive tension of the game, showcasing Valentine's notorious sense of humor.

The disguise was far from foolproof, and Valentine's antics were quickly noticed, leading to a subsequent fine and suspension by Major League Baseball. Yet, this moment transcended its immediate consequences, becoming a beloved anecdote that highlights the lighter side of sports. The "mustache game" is remembered not just for the Mets' victory in the 14th inning but for Valentine's whimsical attempt to become his own "Secret Valentine," injecting a dose of levity into the high-stakes world of professional baseball.

“Every time I look at these prints, I think of my father. If artists can channel their adversity into incredible works of art that we get to enjoy, then we should challenge ourselves to turn our struggles into something that can benefit others.”
