As the story goes, Moses led his people out of slavery to the Promised Land. Now Moses himself was not allowed to enter but ushered in those who came after.
After 13 years with the Cardinals, Curt Flood was traded to the Phillies in 1969, but Flood refused the trade and sued for the right to be a free agent. You see, Baseball, up to that time, had the reserve clause meaning the team still owned the player’s rights after the contract had expired. Flood asserted that he was not property to be bought and sold. Flood ultimately lost his case, but his suit forever changed Baseball. By the mid-seventies, free agency was well established and significantly increased players’ salaries and freedom. Flood never saw the benefit. Blacklisted, he sat out 1970, played a few games in 1971, and then retired. Like Moses, he led the way but never got to the Promised Land but changed things forever for those who came after him.
