A much better player than you may realize, he started his career in St. Louis where he was the Rookie of the Year in 1954. A few years later he joined the Dodgers and when they moved into the LA Coliseum, they found themselves playing in a stadium that wasn't designed for baseball. Left field was only 251 feet away, but there was a 42-foot screen standing in front of it. Moon, a lefty, figured out how to alter his swing and send these enormous, looping fly balls over that screen. They became known as Moon Shots, a nickname that caught on (with the help of the legendary Vin Scully) during a time when America was completely obsessed with the Space Race.

And then there's Wally himself. If you've never seen a photograph of him, I encourage you to look one up. He had one of the most remarkable unibrows in baseball history, and a face that looked like it belonged in a comic book. Between that face, his name, and the whole Moon Shot business, I couldn't resist. This one is for me. I had to.

Not every baseball story needs to be about a legendary moment or a household name.
